Irish Left With Ukraine – Neither Moscow nor Washington

See the latest developments from Washington and Moscow below as reported by RTÉ, Trump and the Ukrainian press (all reports 12th February 2025). 

Rather than proving that Ukraine is a proxy of the US in a war with Russia, this bartering of Ukraine over the heads of Zelensky and Ukraine, demonstrates conclusively the essential disinterest of the US in the war and the defense of Ukraine. Ukraine can be dumped and, before a chair has been pulled out for the ‘negotiations’, several of Russia’s fundamental positions have been conceded: no membership of NATO, no return to the 2014 borders; and the recent prospect of ‘peacekeeping’ troops is off the table, for the US anyway. 

The essential independence – and vulnerability – of Ukraine is revealed: Ukraine means nothing to Trump and the US. Rather than being in the camp of the West, Ukraine was being supplied with arms as long as it suited the interests of the donor. Now it can be set adrift with a stroke of Trump’s sharpie, pushed towards the arms of the aggressor. It’s accidental use to the other imperialism having worn out.
